Here are five steps to creating a real, lucrative business as an author, speaker, coach, seminar leader, online marketer or as any other "expert role" where you make an income by sharing strategies and solutions that help people improve their life or business.
Define Your Message and Market
There's two ways to approach this business.
1. ?You already have a message that you deeply want to share with others, and you're called and committed to sharing it, OR
2. ?You've researched and recognized a need in a specific market that is being unaddressed, underserved or poorly served.
I think REAL success in the industry happens when you combine both of the above. Certainly, though, either is fine and the main point is to decide WHAT you want to teach and WHO you want to teach it to.
Know What Your Audience Needs & What They're Being Offered
After you've clarified your message and market, it's time to do some basic research and further understand WHAT your audience really needs and WHO ELSE in the marketplace is already serving them.
The research is pretty simple. All you need to do is Google around for a day learning more about your customers and competitors. My main objective is to understand your audience and what they need and to learn about other products, programs, and price points being offered to them by other "gurus."
With that information in hand, You will now know what to create and charge.
Package Your Information
Here's a earth-shattering idea for most people: You can't make money unless you have something to SELL! 🙂
The only way to get PAID for what you know is to PACKAGE it in a way that customers can BUY. Simple, right?
In the expert/information space, that means creating a product or program that they can access. For example:
-- Books, ebooks, special reports
-- Seminars, workshops, conferences, retreats
-- Coaching programs
-- DVD or audio home study programs
-- Online training
Once you create any of the above, you have something to promote and make money on.
NOTE: THIS is where most would-be experts fail. They spin 'round and 'round and never CREATE anything. They say, "Oh, next year I'll write that book," or they keep waiting to record a course in audio or video, or they never discipline themselves to sit down and outline a real seminar or coaching program.
The people who win are the people who CREATE!
Promote, Promote, Promote
Once you've packaged your knowledge into something people can buy, it's time to sell it. And the only way to do that is to create the marketing materials and websites needed to do it.
That means you have to put up a website and get people to that website through the vehicles like search optimization, affiliate promotions, viral videos, social and traditional media, etc.
There's no way around it: to make money with your message you have to sell.
The GOOD NEWS is that these days "selling" means just giving away great information upfront at no cost, then saying to the customer, "Hey, if you liked that, and you want more, buy my stuff."
